As India hosts the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, the conversation around trade, resilient supply chains, innovation and stronger cooperation across the Global South becomes increasingly important.
For India, this is also a moment to look beyond traditional export markets.
Tea can be part of that conversation.
India exported 285.53 million kg of tea in 2025, valued at approximately US$993.76 million. Russia alone accounted for 33.23 million kg of Indian tea exports in 2024–25.
But the next opportunity may not simply be about exporting more tea.
It is about exporting more value.
Specialty teas.
Origin-based teas.
Artisan processing.
Premium formats.
Value-added tea products.
And products that carry a clear story of origin, quality and responsible sourcing.
Assam has an important role to play here.
From the Brahmaputra Valley to international markets, Assam’s tea heritage can become part of a broader India-to-Global-South value chain—connecting agricultural origin, entrepreneurship, innovation and international trade.
For Indian tea businesses, the question is therefore not only:
“Where can we export tea?”
Perhaps the bigger question is:
“What kind of Indian tea products can create stronger value in the emerging global markets?”
Tea should not be limited to volume.
It should also be about origin, craftsmanship, innovation and value creation.
From Assam/Ooty/Munnar/Dargiling To the world.
