Everyone is discussing whisky, luxury cars and headline tariff cuts under the India–UK FTA.
But one opportunity deserves far more attention:
Green steel and low-carbon aluminium.
India has secured preferential annual access for more than 1.1 million tonnes of steel into the UK market.
Qualifying aluminium products also gain preferential market access.
But from 2027, the rules of competition begin to change.
With the UK’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, the winning supplier may no longer be the one offering only the lowest price.
It may be the one offering the lowest embedded carbon.
That could create major opportunities for:
Steel recyclers
Aluminium recyclers
Rolling mills
Extrusion companies
Foundries
Engineering manufacturers
Auto-component suppliers
Thousands of Indian MSMEs
The real opportunity is not to export more raw metal.
It is to export more value-added, certified, low-carbon products.
Indian companies now need to:
Understand the FTA product coverage
Assess CBAM readiness
Improve traceability and carbon data
Upgrade quality and certifications
Build partnerships with UK buyers
Move before competitors lock in the market
The India–UK FTA may open the door.
But it will not decide who wins.
Preparation will.
Will Indian companies lead the UK’s next wave of green steel and low-carbon aluminium imports?
Or will better-prepared global suppliers capture the opportunity?
Is your company ready?
