STORY

Tourism and hospitality India is Sri Lanka’s largest tourist source market, with approximately 531,511 Indian arrivals in 2025 and 250,260 arrivals during January–May 2026. Hotels, travel services, religious tourism, wellness tourism and cruise/ferry-linked tourism remain important areas.
Ports, shipping and logistics Colombo, Trincomalee and Kankesanthurai are central to future maritime cooperation. Port services, warehousing, freight forwarding, transshipment, ship repair, cold storage and multimodal logistics are promising areas.
Digital services and finance UPI QR payments are already operational in Sri Lanka. Indian companies can explore fintech, software services, e-governance, cybersecurity, AI, telecom, cloud services and digital payment solutions.

More than 60% of Sri Lankan exports to India have used ISFTA benefits, whereas only around 5% of Indian exports to Sri Lanka have used the provisions, indicating scope for better utilisation by Indian exporters.

Target distributors and joint ventures: Sri Lankan importers, dealers and project contractors are useful partners for pharmaceuticals, machinery, food products, auto parts and construction products.

Build a southern-India supply chain: Tamil Nadu exporters can leverage proximity through Chennai, Tuticorin/V.O. Chidambaranar and Nagapattinam connections, subject to available shipping and ferry services.

Prioritise after-sales service: Machinery, engineering goods, medical equipment and auto parts require local service, spare-parts and technical-support arrangements.

Monitor payment mechanisms: INR settlement, UPI-based payments and improved banking connectivity may reduce transaction friction, but exporters should confirm bank procedures, exchange-control rules and settlement eligibility.

Track ETCA and trade-policy developments: Negotiations to broaden the existing ISFTA into an Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement have been held, with 14 rounds reported up to July 2024. Future changes could affect services, investment, trade facilitation and technology cooperation.

5. Practical Conclusion
The strongest near-term opportunities are pharmaceuticals, food products, textiles, auto components, machinery, solar equipment, tourism and logistics. The strongest future opportunities are renewable energy, electricity connectivity, Trincomalee energy projects, digital public infrastructure, healthcare, ports, ship repair, higher education and regional manufacturing.

For Indian MSMEs, Sri Lanka should be approached not only as an export destination but also as a partner market for distribution, tourism, services, project contracting and joint manufacturing.
