But experienced exporters know one important truth:

Not every export order is a good export order.

Sometimes the biggest risk is not losing an order.
It is accepting the wrong one without checking the basics.

Before saying “yes” to any export deal, a smart exporter should pause and ask the right questions.

Here are 7 important questions worth checking first:

1️⃣ Who is the buyer and how reliable are they?
Knowing the buyer’s background is the first step in reducing risk.

2️⃣ What payment term is being offered?
Advance, LC, TT, DP, or DA — payment structure can change the entire risk level of the deal.

3️⃣ Which Incoterm fits this shipment best?
Choosing the wrong Incoterm can create confusion around cost, responsibility, and liability.

4️⃣ Do we have the correct HS code and compliance clarity?
One wrong classification can lead to customs issues, delays, or extra cost.

5️⃣ Can we maintain the required quality consistently?
Getting an order is one thing. Delivering the same promised quality every time is another.

6️⃣ Are packaging, labeling, and destination requirements fully clear?
Small mistakes here can create major trouble at customs or at the buyer’s end.

7️⃣ Are all shipment and payment documents ready in proper format?
Missing or incorrect documents can delay cargo, payment, or both.

India–Tanzania trade is moving from a traditional buyer-seller relationship to a strategic growth corridor.

Bilateral trade reached US$8.64 billion in FY 2024/25, with Indian exports to Tanzania at US$4.79 billion and imports from Tanzania at US$3.85 billion. India was also Tanzania’s No.1 export destination in 2023, taking about 21% of Tanzania’s total exports.

The opportunity is clear, but so is the gap.

Tanzania’s exports to India are still led largely by commodities such as gold, cashew nuts and dried legumes, while India’s exports to Tanzania are dominated by refined petroleum, pharmaceuticals, sugar, vehicles, machinery and industrial goods.

This means the corridor is strong in volume, but still underdeveloped in value addition.

The real opportunity now is not just more trade, but better trade: agro-processing, mineral refining, textile and cotton value chains, pharma and healthcare, timber and furniture, logistics, warehousing and solar-linked industrial supply chains. Tanzania’s economy is being driven by agriculture, manufacturing, construction and mining, which makes these sectors commercially relevant for serious Indian investors and exporters.

A practical roadmap is simple:

Enter Tanzania with a long-term market-building approach, not just as a seller. Choose one sector and go deep. Build trusted local partnerships. Use Tanzania not only as a domestic market, but as a gateway to East Africa. Focus on processing, packaging, assembly and downstream value creation rather than raw trade alone.

In my view, the next phase of India–Tanzania trade will belong to businesses that move early, build locally and think regionally.

The trade volume is already significant.
The gap is visible.
The opportunity is real.
Now the focus must shift to execution.

One of the common mistakes is that there are times when there is confusion between the names in the world of export and shipping, and it can have bad consequences in the export process!

📝 Surrendered B/L
In the world of shipping, when we say "surrendered bill of lading", it means that the exporter handed over the original copies of the bill of lading to the shipping company, and asked them that the importer receive the goods without providing the original.

Simply, the original paper is of great importance, and the importer can clear the shipment electronically or based on his name in the shipping line system.

Why do companies do this? 📦
In order to speed up the release of goods and avoid the headache of paper documents.
It is very useful in these cases:
✅ The importer is reliable and the relationship between the two parties is good.
✅ The shipment must be delivered quickly (e.g. perishable goods).
✅ Payment made in advance before shipment.
✅ There is no time to send the original documents.

💻 Telex Release
After the company actually works the surrender, the role of communication between the offices comes into play.
The shipping company's office in the country of export sends an official notification (Telex/Email/System Notification) to their office in the country of arrival, telling them, "Guys, the shipment has been delivered here with us (Surrendered), the importer can receive it from the original."
