Incoterms® are internationally recognized three-letter rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). They clarify the responsibilities, costs, and risks of the seller and buyer in the delivery of goods, helping prevent misunderstandings in domestic and international trade.
Why Incoterms are important
Clear allocation of responsibilities: They specify who arranges transportation, export clearance, import clearance, insurance, loading, unloading, and delivery.
Risk management: Each rule identifies the point at which the risk of loss or damage transfers from the seller to the buyer.
Accurate cost calculation: Exporters and importers can determine freight, insurance, customs, handling, and delivery costs more reliably.
Prevention of disputes: Standardized terminology reduces confusion caused by different languages, legal systems, and commercial practices.
Better quotation and negotiation: A quotation such as “CIF Jebel Ali, Incoterms® 2020” communicates more clearly than a vague expression such as “delivered price.”
Improved logistics planning: Both parties know which activities they must arrange and which documents they must provide.
Support for contract enforcement: Courts, arbitrators, banks, freight forwarders, and customs professionals can interpret the agreed rule consistently.
